How does a waterless flushing toilet work?

ZenLoo looks and feels like a normal toilet, but it uses no water. When you flush, a patented sealing mechanism under the bowl wraps the waste in a continuous liner and moves it into a barrel below the floor. The bowl is clean after every use.

It isn't a composting toilet. There's no sawdust, no visible waste and nothing for guests to learn.

Patented sealing technology, created by Loowatt

At the heart of every ZenLoo is a patented sealing mechanism developed by Loowatt, the UK company behind ZenLoo. It’s what makes a waterless toilet feel like a normal flush: each use is sealed away instantly, with no water, no chemicals and no smell.

Loowatt also runs waterless sanitation services in Madagascar and South Africa. Every ZenLoo sold in the UK helps support that work.

No water

Zero litres per flush. No mains supply needed.

No smell

A continuous airlock seals waste away.

No chemicals

Nothing added to the bowl or the waste.

Runs on 12V

From a leisure battery or solar.

What happens when you flush

  1. 1

    Use it as normal

Sit, use the toilet, add toilet paper and press flush.

  2. 2

    The waste is sealed

The mechanism wraps each use in the liner, creating a continuous airlock.

  3. 3

    Stored below the floor

Sealed waste collects in a lidded barrel under the toilet, out of sight.

  4. 4

    The barrel is swapped

When it’s full, your team replaces it. As simple as changing a bin liner.

  5. 5

    We collect it

Our waste partner takes sealed barrels for waste-to-energy treatment.

Does it smell?

No. The airlock keeps waste and odour sealed away from the bowl. Because there’s no water, there’s also no splashing or faecal mist when you flush.

What powers it?

ZenLoo runs on 12V DC, from a leisure battery or solar. It draws 6.5A while flushing and 0.3A on standby. No mains water, sewer or mains electricity needed.

FAQS: How it works

Is ZenLoo a composting toilet?

No. It’s a waterless flushing toilet. There’s no sawdust, no compost and no visible waste.

Does a waterless toilet smell?

ZenLoo doesn’t. A continuous airlock seals waste away from the bowl.

Does ZenLoo need electricity?

It needs a 12V DC supply, such as a leisure battery or solar. It doesn’t need mains power.

Can my cleaning staff maintain it?

Yes. Servicing is changing liners and swapping barrels, with no specialist needed.

What happens if a guest flushes something they shouldn’t?

A sensor stops the flush and shows “blockage”. Clear it and press reset. Items can be retrieved with the reverse button.

Who developed ZenLoo’s technology?
